From July 22-28, 2019, three members of NASA's Airspace Operations Laboratory, representing the UAS Traffic Management (UTM) project, spent a week engaging the public at the largest fly-in airshow in the world, EAA AirVenture, with a record attendance of 642,000 aviation enthusiasts. Attendees enjoyed learning about the UTM concept, an effort to safely-enable low-altitude sUAS operations, and how it may impact the airspace they know today. While interacting with knowledgeable researchers, attendees were shown the visualization tools NASA uses for developing and testing the UTM concept and technologies. Additionally, three speaking engagements helped further spread the message of NASA's UTM research: a forum presentation on the process used to evaluate the UTM concept, a 'flight line' camera interview, and a radio interview (linked here as a great example of the kinds of conversations had during the week-long show). An article was also published in the event's own newspaper "EAA AirVenture Today" detailing the UTM concept phases, the testing effort supported by the AOL, and the potential benefits and future of the system.
