Field guide for an effective human-automation collaboration in NextGen  (2009)
Abstract Header
The main objective of the NASA Airportal Human Systems Integration (HSI) research focus area is to provide critical guidance that is specifically relevant to the design and development of enhanced automation in the airport environment. This paper describes an approach to improve communication between design engineers and human factors experts. The communication risks between software design engineers and human factors experts can be summarized by one statement: The software engineer requires succinct, articulate, lucid human factors input that focuses on a specific solution at the appropriate time. Our strategy is to orchestrate diverse techniques to uncover the specific requirements of the design engineer by combining a functional work analysis methodology, research, lessons learned and best practices in human factors and cognitive psychology.
