Research Experience:
1996 – Senior Research Associate, NASA Ames Research Center/San Jose State University
- Interpersonal Team Training: Reviewed research literature to identify effective team training and interpersonal team training strategies. Currently developing team training program for research study on developing teamwork skills for long-duration teams in isolated environments.
- Isolation Research Study: Collaborated on design, implementation, conduct, coding, and presentation of research findings as part of ongoing multi-year team research project on psychophysiological indicators of stress during long-duration space flight. Developed participant training materials.
- Facilitation Training: Conducted research on effective adult learning and facilitation techniques for trainers to maximize learning and transfer of training. Utilized our research findings and the adult education, facilitation, and counseling literatures to develop a train-the-trainer manual to provide guidance to airline instructors on how to facilitate debriefing after recurrent training for airline pilots. Collaborated on the development and presentation of facilitation training workshops at international conferences, airlines, an aeronautical university, and a major corporation. Co-wrote a Facilitation training manual used by airlines throughout the world. Co-authored, assisted with editing, and prepared camera-ready manuscript of a book on facilitation in the aviation environment. Co-developed the Debriefing Assessment Battery (DAB), a rating tool that evaluates the facilitation skills of instructors. Co-authored a peer-reviewed journal article and multiple international conference presentations and publications.
- Monitoring and Challenging Research Study: Oversaw Full-Mission Simulator study (NASA’s B747-400 simulator) of monitoring and challenging behaviors of airline pilots. Coded and analyzed data. Prepared and presented research findings at conferences.
- Automation Bias Research Study: Helped develop, run, analyze, and present findings of part-task simulation study on automation bias and omission and commission errors. Co-authored a peer-reviewed journal article and multiple conference presentations and publications.
